# Number line and its Uses

When the numbers need to be represented in a visual form, we use the concept of number lines. We come across number lines in a variety of chapters in math. The number line follows a specific pattern in which the numbers keep on increasing as we move towards the right side of the horizontal line and the numbers keep on decreasing as we move towards the left side of the horizontal line. Both the rational numbers and the irrational numbers can be marked on a number line. The number line has various uses in the subject of math. With the help of a number line, we can easily perform some basic arithmetic operations. The number line also facilitates the comparison of different numbers. In this article, we will learn some of the important things related to the number line along with learning in brief the concept of integers.

## What Do You Mean by Integer?

We often get confused about the concept of integers. The word integer comes from the Latin word and means intact. Integers include all the whole numbers and all the negative numbers. Fractions and decimals do not form part of the integers. Integers can be divided into three broad categories which are as follows:

• Positive integers include all natural numbers like 3, 67, 53, etc.
• Negative integers include all negative whole numbers like -3, -67, -53, etc.
• Zero is neither a positive number nor a negative number.

## Various Rules of Integers

Several rules should be followed with integers. These are as follows:

• When we add one positive integer with another positive integer, we get an integer.
• When we add one negative integer with another negative integer, we get an integer.
• When we multiply one negative integer with another negative integer, we get an integer.
• When we multiply one positive integer with another positive integer, we get an integer.

## Various Parts of a Number Line

The number line has three basic parts. Let us discuss all the three parts of the number line briefly.

• 0 can be defined as the point of origin or the middle point. This middle point helps us in differentiating between negative numbers and positive numbers.
• All the numbers placed on the right side of the point of origin are positive and are greater than the numbers placed on the left side.
• All the numbers placed on the left side of the point of origin are negative and are smaller than the numbers placed on the right side.

## Different Types of Numbers Than Can be Represented on Number Line

All the numbers that form part of the real number system can be represented on the number line. Let us learn about all these numbers in detail.

• Irrational numbers like √2, √53, etc can be represented on the number line.
• Integers like -4, 6, -34, 7, etc can be represented on the number line.
• Fractions like 45/51, 41/71, 3/4, etc can be represented on the number line.
• Decimals like 0.45, 0.75, 0.51, etc can be represented on the number line.
• Whole numbers like 0, 1, 45, 67, etc can be represented on the number line.

## Use of Number Line in the Concept of Linear Inequalities

Apart from representing the numbers that form part of the real number system, the number line is also used to show solutions to linear inequalities. For example, x is equal to or greater than 56 can easily be shown on the number line. Likewise, x is smaller than 56 can also be shown on the number line.
