  • 0 can be defined as the point of origin or the middle point. This middle point helps us in differentiating between negative numbers and positive numbers.
  • All the numbers placed on the right side of the point of origin are positive and are greater than the numbers placed on the left side.
  • All the numbers placed on the left side of the point of origin are negative and are smaller than the numbers placed on the right side.

Apart from representing the numbers that form part of the real number system, the number line is also used to show solutions to linear inequalities. For example, x is equal to or greater than 56 can easily be shown on the number line. Likewise, x is smaller than 56 can also be shown on the number line.
